Vegetarian - Plenty To Choose From

May 24th, 2007 by Webmaster

It used to be very difficult to be a vegetarian but it’s a lot easier now. There are plenty of choices in restaurants and vegetarian cooking at home is made easier by supermarkets being more vegetarian friendly. There is a wide range of ingredients from around the world. You can also choose from non-meat ready meals.

People have different reasons for not eating meat and fish. Some choose on ethical grounds and others do it for health reasons. Some people react badly to eating meat, and simply don’t like the taste. Everyone would benefit from eating less red meat and more fruit and vegetables. Vegetarian cooking doesn’t have to be boring, a little imagination and fresh produce will go a long way. In addition to fruit and vegetables, there are grains, pulses, pasta, herbs and nuts.

You must be careful that you get a balanced diet, with all the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy body. Vegetarian cooking does entail less fat intake and this can also involves the choice of dairy products. Semi skimmed milk and low fat yogurts and cheeses are another healthy option. Vegetarian cooking can be further enhanced with the unsaturated cooking oils such as olive, peanut, corn and sunflower.

Most people stick to a few favorite vegetables, but it’s worthwhile trying some less commonly used ones to add variety to your vegetable cooking. Spinach is good for its iron content and can be cooked or added raw to salads. There are different sorts of peppers, which can spice up a meal. The red, orange and yellow varieties are sweeter than the more bitter green. If you like the taste of onion, you’ll probably like the mild onion like flavor of leeks. Parsnips are a versatile root vegetable and are particularly tasty when roasted in the oven. Fennel has an aniseed taste and goes well with celeriac in vegetable casseroles. Don’t forget the garlic, because that’s good for the heart and asparagus is a treat especially cooked in a nice sauce.

Pulses and lentils are simple sources of valuable protein but soak them overnight before cooking, with the exception of black-eyed peas. Beans need to be boiled on a high heat for ten minutes to remove any toxins. Experiment with chickpeas, haricot beans, kidney beans and split peas. There are also green, brown and red lentils, which are often used in vegetarian cooking.

With the addition of spices and herbs, non-meat dishes can be every bit as tasty. Plant some herbs in the garden if you have one. Make sure your food cupboard has s supply of the basics, most often required in vegetarian cooking recipes and you’ll never want to go back to stodgy meat!

Sending Thank You Notes

May 24th, 2007 by Webmaster

With the craziness in the world these days, the simplest of things get forgotten and overlooked. My mother told me when I was younger, that whenever a gift is received or someone does something out of the norm, it is only respectful and polite to send thank you notes. She also told me that thank you notes should be sent out immediately, or within two weeks if it was a wedding or shower with lots of guests and gifts to keep track of. I have always remembered her advice.

After returning from our honeymoon, my husband and I went through all of our gifts and made lists of what was received and from whom. I stayed up late for several evenings taking the time to write personalized thank you notes. It is in my opinion, that if someone took the time and cared enough to get us a present, they should be thanked properly and respectfully. Thank you notes are the simplest of ways that can be done. When you have lots of thank you notes to send, it may seem entirely too time consuming to personalize every invitation, but it should be done. I had a lot of thank you notes to send out from our wedding and though it was terribly time consuming, I made sure that I made each one personal. I specifically mentioned what the gift was, maybe what it would be used for, and thanked them for being a part of our wedding day and our lives. I want people to know that I appreciate them and their gesture.

I have been known to send thank you notes for lots of different reasons. I’ve sent them when someone has gone out of their way for me in running an errand or doing a favor for me. I’ve taken the time to send thank you notes to a relative for a wonderful meal that they cooked and invited me to join them. It has become common for people to send thank you notes after a job interview as well. Many salespeople now send thank you notes to clients when they purchase something from them. I recently had a massage and received a thank you note from the massage therapist. She sent me a coupon for another massage in the future.

Lots of people do some very sweet things for my daughter. I’ve had people who like to give me clothing that their children outgrew or toys. While they may simply be hand-me-downs, it was thoughtful and generous. Gestures, such as that, are deserving of thank you notes. No matter what someone does for you - whether it be purchasing a gift or simply running an errand for you, they deserve to know that they are appreciated. More thank you notes and appreciation would make the world a better place.

Detect Smoke With The Help Of Smoke Detectors

May 23rd, 2007 by Webmaster

A few weeks ago, my tiny town suffered a horrific tragedy. An older home caught fire in the middle of the night and killed one adult and his four grandchildren. The grandmother made it out of the house in time saying that a smoke alarm woke her up. In our little community, this was an extremely big loss and we were all left wondering how this could happen. When we read in the local newspaper that a smoke alarm had gone off, we wondered why the other five people did not hear it in time.

As the cold sets in and we all prepare for winter, please take a moment to check all of the smoke detectors in your house. Check them regularly and keep extra batteries on hand just in case. We will all be turning our furnaces on soon and it is a good idea to make sure that all of the smoke detectors in your home are working properly. It is recommended that when you set your clocks to coincide with daylight savings changes you also check the batteries in your smoke alarms. Doing so more often is an even better idea.

I live in a small house that is only about eight hundred square feet. There are four smoke detectors in the main level and one in the basement. I have also put up a carbon monoxide detector in the sleeping quarters. Practically every home has several smoke alarms but fewer than necessary have carbon monoxide detectors.

Please go out today and get enough carbon monoxide and smoke detectors for every area of your home. If you have alarms but they are too far away from your sleeping area, they may not be able to warn you in time. Breathing in smoke or carbon monoxide for only a few minutes is enough to render you unconscious and in serious danger. This of course happens more quickly to children.

The children who died last month ranged in age from thirteen years to thirteen months. The oldest was a strong and healthy football player who should have been able to get out of that house. The only way this situation makes sense to me is if the smoke detectors in the house did not all work properly. Please read these words and commit to taking action before you learn this lesson the hard way as my little town did. Fire spreads quickly and can be uncontrollable within seconds. Protect yourself and your family every way that you can. Be thoughtful and proactive when it comes to the safety of your family.

Water Your Plants Through Self Watering Planter

May 22nd, 2007 by Webmaster

I never used to keep plants in my home. This is not because I don’t like them. It is because I kill them. I actually managed to kill an aloe plant. This is supposed to be nearly impossible. The trouble is water. I just don’t know how much to give. Either I add too much or not enough. Now that the self watering planter has been invented I am thinking about adding some plants to my interior design plan.

Plants are very beautiful and they can add so much to a room. They provide depth, color and texture to any interior decorating design and they can not really be duplicated. I have tried fake plants and they just look awful. You can tell at a glance that they are not the real thing.

However, no matter how lovely live plants are they are no longer lovely if they are wilted or dried to a crisp. A self watering planter can bring the beauty of live plants into any room with the promise of a long, healthy plant life. The added texture and color will do wonders for your interior decorating ideas.

Plants are not only beautiful. They also serve a very valuable function as well. The self watering planter is designed to keep the valuable vegetation alive and healthy while indoors. These plants add oxygen to your home and they work to make the condition of the air around you better all the way around.

You really want to maintain your plant life in your home not only because it is beautiful but it also serves to help you breathe easier. A self watering planter can help you maintain your vegetation no matter how hectic your schedule is and no matter how forgetful you may be.

So how does a self watering planter work? There is a vacuum-type element in the apparatus that serves to pull water from an ingenious reservoir built right into the unit. A tube moves the necessary amount of water from the reservoir to the plant itself.

I was a little skeptical about the self watering planter at first. After all, if I don’t know when to feed a plant, how does the planter. I found out that there is a sensor built right into the unit that tells the vacuum when it needs to do its job. This same sensor tells the vacuum to stop adding water to the plant when it is saturated.

Eating Raw Foods For Good Health

May 21st, 2007 by Webmaster

If you are doing research into diets, you may come across one that tells you to only eat raw foods. While this diet is good in theory, it may not be practical for most people. Raw foods are often the best for your health however, and they should be a part of any diet. Not only are raw foods full of nutrients, they are also readily available in most stores where you buy groceries. As with any food, however, there are some safety issues.

When you think of raw foods, vegetables and fruits are probably the first things that come to mind. These should be staples in a healthy diet, and should be consumed at every meal. You just have to decide which of these raw foods are your favorites, and remember to buy plenty each trip to the store. Remember when eating these raw foods that they must all be washed thoroughly before you eat them. They may have e coli on them, and this is not something you want to mess with. Even if the fruit has a rind, you still want to wash it. If there is something unsavory on the rind, you will push it through to the fruit when you cut it with a knife.

Though you should not eat meats as are part of a raw food diet, some people do like to eat raw fish, otherwise known as sushi. Though I have never tried this myself, I know a lot of people like it, and enjoy an evening out just to get some. Any raw foods you consume like this should come from a restaurant that is clean, and has a good reputation. You do not want to eat bad fish, especially if it is raw. If you are pregnant, you may want to skip this altogether.

If you decide to go with raw foods exclusively, talk with your doctor to be sure you are getting a balanced diet. Some raw foods are better than others, and you don’t want to become weak because you aren’t getting what your body needs. Your doctor or a good nutritionist can help guide you in the right direction, and will give you the low down on raw foods and what they can do for you and your health. They should be able to help you with a simple menu plan to get you started if you want to eat better, but aren’t really sure where to start.

Blaming Potty Training Techniques For Person’s Action

May 21st, 2007 by Webmaster

There are many experts on every topic imaginable. There are people who are experts in finances, outer space, science, mathematics and computers. The one field seems to have the most out spoken experts is the field of human psychology in general and child rearing in particular. It seems that everyone feels that they are an expert on how people should raise their children. How a person was parented seems to be a leading defense in our criminal system and many psychologists have people in therapy for years discussing their childhood. So often experts refer back to potty training to explain why someone behaves the way they do.

I have been in the human services field for many years. I become outraged when I hear so called experts make blanket statements about how potty training and other child rearing techniques are to blame for a person’s actions. I have worked with children that have been severely abused and neglected by their parents, and yet they are able to move on with their lives and become happy productive citizens. I think that the experts that go on talk shows and write books, like to give people excuses for their poor behavior. They also simplify major mental health issues and the actions that can result from the illness, by blaming the parents of the individuals. It is ludicrous to believe that potty training techniques that are done are going to cause a person to become a criminal. To me this is irresponsible and damaging for the people that listen to these experts. There are many excellent therapist and psychologists that make real differences in the lives of those they treat. Their time is so filled with appointments that they do not have the time to go on talk shows. The famous experts tend to be attention seekers that want to be celebrities and they use basic knowledge in psychology to make a name for themselves.

Anyone that has been involved in good growth producing therapy knows that the best way to move on with their lives is to make a plan with obtainable goals and to move forward. They may need to process things that happened to them as children, but they are taught not to dwell in the past. I have never seen anyone become a well adjusted adult if they are clinging to the memories of their potty training. Most adults do not even have any recollection of the potty training techniques that were used by their parents.

Many new parents find themselves afraid to parent their children because they feel they will scar them for life. If they use the simple techniques of correcting undesirable behavior and present consistent guidance, their children will have the desired behaviors. You do not need to listen to the experts to have a well adjusted child; you need to listen to your child.

Potato Salad In Different Ways

May 21st, 2007 by Webmaster

Potato salad is a traditional favorite made in a variety of combinations from quick and easy recipes. There are lots of substitutions that can be made to the recipe that won’t take away from the taste at all, but add to it in a different way. Common ingredients to most potato salad recipes are potatoes of course, eggs, onions, mayonnaise, vinegar, and mustard, but additions or substitutions like sweet relish, bacon bits, celery seed, kalamata olives, and other ingredients are also common. For hot versions of the recipe, , like hot German potato salad, vinegar, water, flour, and bacon drippings are used to make the sauce instead of mayonnaise and mustard. This recipe is a delicious favorite and complements brats, sausages, hamburgers, and anything else you are grilling.

There are lots and lots of potato salad recipes, and most of us have at least a couple in our compilation of cook books, but if you’re in the mood for something new, check out the web to try something different. How about picnic potato salad or sour cream potato salad, maybe try it warm with green beans, or Hawaiian style with sweet potatoes. Caesar or Greek recipes are also popular variations. Cooking light magazine features healthy versions of a variety of potato salad favorites on its website at www.cookinglight.com. For more healthy recipes visit www.fatfree.com for fat free potato salad recipes and others great ideas if you want to cut more fat from your diet. If you are trying to cut down I would recommend making your own over purchasing deli potato salad by the pound. There usually are not light versions, and you can control how much and what kind of fat when making your own, and it will be better anyway! You can add the ingredients you want and leave out what you don’t. It will cost less too!

Now that you’re almost finished reading this article, your taste buds should be tantalized and ready for you know what! Work Towards Getting Yourself Out Of Debt

May 19th, 2007 by Webmaster

Getting yourself into debt is not difficult to do. Getting yourself out of debt can take years. Many Americans are thousands of dollars in debt. Credit card companies structure their plans to get people into debt and keep them there as long as possible in order to make money off of them. If you find yourself in this common position do not fret. There are resources out there to help you get out of debt. It takes a lot of work and dedication to get out of debt but it can be done.

Many people turn to credit counseling agencies for help getting out of debt. This is not always a good idea. One of my close friends works for Wells Fargo as a loan officer. She helps people get loans every day and tells me that working with a credit counseling agency can cripple some people. These agencies say that they will consolidate all of your debts into one, small monthly fee. From this monthly payment all of your bills will be paid. Unfortunately some of your bills may not get paid by the due date and you will be charged late fees. In this way, working with a credit counseling agency may in fact put you deeper in debt.

Once you have signed on with a credit counseling service, your credit is frozen in a way. People like my friend at Wells Fargo will have a difficult, if not impossible, time trying to work with you on obtaining a loan. If you are trying to get out of debt you should seriously consider all of your options before signing up with any service designed to help you manage your debt.

If you are not trying to get out of debt at the moment but are concerned about the possibility of being in debt and want to avoid, you must pay yourself first. This means that you should put away at least ten percent from every paycheck into a savings account. This will provide you with a cushion if unexpected or inflated bills come your way.

Another must when trying to stay out of debt is to live within your means. The ability to get your hands on a lot of credit cards does not mean that you should. Most Americans are in financial trouble because of credit card debt. If you can avoid living off of plastic you should be able to stay out of debt. Another biggie: health insurance. Medical bills are a huge cause of debt in this country. Make sure that you and your family are appropriately covered if you want to keep yourself out of debt.

Use Monthly Bill Organizer To Avoid Missing Out On Payment

May 18th, 2007 by Webmaster

Anyone who finds that time passes by too quickly to keep track of every detail in daily activities would fair well to getting a monthly bill organizer to keep financial matters in order. Some of us are too aware of how a debt can grow very fast when one or two payments are missed. Even late payments can be detrimental to your credit which in turn will be detrimental to your financial health.

Many people don’t realize how much of an impact missing a payment here and there can do to someone’s financial track record. As bills accumulate it becomes more and more difficult to keep things in order. A monthly bill organizer can save you time and money in the long run. This can save your credit and your pocketbook.

Missing payments on credit cards is a well-known way to ruin your credit rating. Missing payments will leave severe black marks on your rating. Late payments will classify you as aƓslow pay customer. These marks against your record can lead to higher interest rates in the future. You also may find getting credit a real hassle as well.

The sad thing about this situation is that many of us miss payments out of simply disorganization. The money is in the bank and the debtor is more than happy to pay but the statement disappears under a pile of mail. A monthly bill organizer can help you keep your payment statements well organized and in place.

On the other hand, you also may want to look into a monthly bill organizer if you have communication problems with your spouse. My husband and I each paid our mortgage during the same week. I was in the bank and I figured that I might as well make a payment. In the meantime, my husband sent the bank a mortgage payment as well. A monthly bill organizer could have been used to keep us communicating clearly on our financial activities.

Of course, the system won’t work unless you use it on a regular basis. However, the monthly bill organizer can help you put everything in a specific space. This is the first step to any organizational endeavor. Keeping records in the same spot can help you stay on track and up to date on your bills.

Investing in a monthly bill organizer now can definitely save you time and money in the future. It is important to remember that you do have to take a few moments to put the item to good use.
