Window Seat For The Romantics

October 16th, 2007 by MyHome

window-seat.jpg

Early this year, we removed the wall separating the balcony and living room to make it look more spacious. We wanted a different look altogether as the usual sliding windows would look dull.

Our designer suggested a window seat as it is practical and adds a new facet to the living room. This element of décor brings warmth and feelings of coziness to the room irrespective of style as it could be added to any room of your home, be it living room, bedroom, bathroom or even your kitchen. It enhances the seating area and creates more storage space.

We settled on a stone base topped with best quality wood panel as cabinets were built under it. Since we wanted to place cushions all over, the height of the window seat was 18”. The 3” to 4” space was left above till the sill to place cushions.

We got the insides of the seat tiled to avoid leakage issues. The stone base was topped with marble on the sides and wooden panel on top. We chose wood on the top, as it is much lighter than the marble while lifting it to store things inside the cabinets.

With the basic design in place, there was no end to the any other decorative elements need to beautify the seat.

We jazzed up the seat with lot of color and texture. The valances to conceal the curtain fixtures at the top of a window casing, bright colored curtains with tiebacks enhanced the window seat.

Cushions were inviting and colors contrasting the décor made an immediate impact of coziness. Interesting knick-knacks were hung on the wall next to the seat to blend the window seat to the rest of the décor in a natural manner.

This window seat has become the most romantic nook for my husband and me as we find ourselves sitting there, practically every night with our coffee mugs and conversations.

I plan to renovate my bathroom soon and might a window seat so I can enjoy my pedicures and manicures. My imagination has no limits.

Wise Decisions While Buying Furniture

October 13th, 2007 by MyHome

wise-decisions-while-furniture-buying.jpg

Three months ago, our small town experienced two days of torrential rains. My home too was not spared from the damage. Water entered the ground floor of my home and ruined all my expensive pieces of furniture. Now we have decided to refurnish our home with those pieces of furniture, that are useful in our everyday life as against those previously held by us for decor purpose.

Despite being financially sound, we decided to shop by making wise furniture decisions. Till date we do not regret our preference to shop wisely.

While shopping, I kept in mind below mentioned points, so I could get some extra benefits.

  • Search for furniture that is flexible and has dual purpose. A folded dining table placed either in the kitchen or the living room is a space saver. If you need extra cooking space, just unfold it. If you have a couple of friends over for lunch, open it. And if your furniture is flexible, moving the same to new place becomes easy. Our flexible dining table moves kitchen to hall to backyard, etc. many times.
  • Having a space crunch, opt for sofa cum bed. It can be used as sofa during the day and bed at night. You can place this either in your bedroom or in living room with a set of matching chairs. We bought a sofa cum bed instead of a double bed.
  • A solid looking stool can be converted into a coffee table. If not a stool, then you can invest in long, low or high table with shelves. You can place it in the centre of seating arrangement. You can also push it against wall, spread a good tablecloth over it and serve a lavish spread during buffet.
  • Trundle or bunk beds in kid’s room offers additional sleeping space. You can customize the design of bunk beds. You can opt for a bed on the upper level and below, you can put a table for studies / computer with chair and proper lights.
  • If you are short on storage space, buy medium or large sized wicker baskets to store stuff. Top it with a smooth wooden plank to display your souvenirs on it.
  • Invest in extra storage space as moveable shelves / drawers to store household items.
  • Buy furniture pieces that will blend with the decor of all your rooms. If you decide to shift your furniture to another room, it will not stand out like a sore thumb.

Do You Really Need The Bathroom Scale?

September 20th, 2006 by Webmaster

By now I am pretty sure that my bathroom scale hates me. You know what I am talking about right? Just like millions of my countrymen who try to fight the just battle of the bulge, I too was tempted to buy a bathroom scale. I finally found one on a discount sale at the local Walmart and succumbed to my temptation. I regret my decision even now. You want to know why? Well, the first thing is that I should have bought an exercise machine or at least enrolled in the local gym before I bought the damned bathroom scale. I didn’t do that and each time I step into the bathroom and onto the bathroom scale, I am severely taunted.

My bathroom scale is a constant and painful reminder of how many pounds I need to lose. You can call it my sarcastic sidekick in my battle against the bulge. Most people I know usually have allies in the good fight, but I was unlucky enough to be blessed with a despicable fiend and that too in the form of a miserable bathroom scale. Anyways, to cut a long story short, I could bear the taunting no more and decided that I would do something about the weighty issues that had made my life a living hell. So the very next day, I enrolled for a crash program in weight loss at the neighborhood gym.

Here too, it seemed as though my travails were not to leave me alone. There was a gym scale, a slightly larger version of my friendly bathroom scale. And each day as I walked sullenly into the gym to check my weight, the fiend would creak with sarcasm as though I weighed a ton. On that count my bathroom scale was a lot better. At least it never creaked. Nevertheless, undaunted, I would continue with my exertions in the vain hope that I would be able to get a nod or wink of approval from the bathroom scale.

No such luck. You see, I am a sucker for the finer things in life. Which is one of the biggest failings a weight loss practitioner can ever have. Each time I would hit the treadmill, I would more than amply compensate by attacking a juicy steak or a bowl of ice cream. And the result would appear like a smirk on the face of my despicable bathroom scale. So after having spent a month or two sweating it out in the gym, all I had managed to rid myself of was a couple of hundred dollars. So I did the next best thing I could. I got rid of the bathroom scale as well.

Set Right The Bathroom Lighting Fixtures!

September 20th, 2006 by Webmaster

When designing a home, one thing people may not put enough time into is planning their lighting scheme. That might sound like something that is reserved for concerts or theater productions, but you have more to think about than you may realize. You want the lighting in your home to be inviting, easy on the eyes, as well as adequate and functional. One of the most important rooms to consider is the bathroom. There are many bathroom lighting fixtures from which to choose, and you have to decide what is right for you.

Many women put their makeup on in their bathroom each morning. I have lived in a lot of places, and I have to say that not many of them had adequate bathroom lighting fixtures for this purpose. Makeup can be tricky, and you need as much light as you can get. The only thing is, it has to be as close to natural light as possible. Large glaring florescent lights are never a good idea for bathroom lighting fixtures. These give off a harsh light, and if you apply makeup underneath one, you won’t be seeing what you will look like in the light of day.

When it comes to bathroom lighting fixtures, the best kind is something you may not have considered. The sun will give you the best and truest light you can find. The trick is to design your bathroom to get as much natural sunlight as possible without making it a peepshow for the neighbors. If you can’t do this, you have to get the next best thing. Look for bathroom lighting fixtures that will hold a large amount of bulbs for the best light.

You may have seen this type of bathroom lighting fixtures in public bathrooms, or on television. A row of small bulbs along the top of the mirror, and sometimes down the sides, offers the best light for applying makeup and shaving. These lights may not offer a lot of light individually, but when you add them all together, you have a great source of natural looking light that comes from all directions. This is great for seeing everything. If you have a single light hanging over your head, you may end up with makeup lines you didn’t notice, make up that is too dark, or a multitude of shaving nicks.

Home improvement stores are by far your best source for bathroom lighting fixtures. They have lights for every room of the house, and a section specifically geared towards bathroom lighting. Ask a salesperson for help, and make sure you shop around first. You may find fixtures you hadn’t thought of, and ideas you may not have though of on your own.
